I’m writing to share with you all that I’m preparing to take a break. After several intense years of organizing work and some both wonderful and challenging times in community, I am following the advice of a mentor and taking a one year sabbatical; a one year break from all organizing work (October 1, 2023 through October 1, 2024). While I don’t know what comes on the other side of this specifically, I do plan to rejoin liberatory collective work at that time.
Twenty-five years ago, I found organizing community for the first time and I’ve been in it ever since. With an occasional month here and there, I haven’t stopped in all that time; haven’t stopped engaging, building, advocating, agitating, and working at social and ecological justice. It’s who I am – not my job but my work, my life, and I don’t expect to stop as long as I’m on this earth. But I need a break. I need time to step back, heal from burnout, and rest. I need to read and reflect and consider what comes next.
I have been preparing for this transition and want to make sure that I am responsible in passing on what I hold. In the coming month, I will continue to make sure that I tie up loose ends and share any needed information so that the work can go on unhindered by my absence. I would also love to continue to see people socially as you are all my friends and beloveds. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me for a cold beer or a cup of coffee, to take a walk, play a game of chess, climb, garden, swim, whatever. Please take care of yourselves and thank you for continuing the work while I’m away.
